Why an editors and Publishers newsletter?

We are aiming to provide a monthly newsletter with information that is useful and interesting to those of you who use the Starter Kit CMS on a regular basis.  This type of newsletter is not relevant for a majority of the recipients of our e-mail newsletter that is sent to all customer contacts.  So in each e-mail newsletter there will be a link to a page in this Wiki where you can find this newsletter.  If you have any ideas on future articles or would like to send your comments please contact us.

Images

You can now add an image on 'Content' and 'sub-menu' pages on your microsite.  It is a really simple task to add an image and makes your site look much more interesting to visitors.  You can also use a number of images supplied by us in the 'Common Images' folder in 'Common Content'.  If you can think of an image that would be of use to many microsites then please let us know.  We do have access to a number of copyright free image sites and maybe able to source it for you.  We can't make any promises, but if it is something that will benefit everyone, we will do our best to source the image and make it available in Common Content. "A picture says a thousand words".  To have your questions answered just click hereand if you still have some unanswered questions please contact us

Using 'Netgem' to carry out your 'QA'

QAing has been made easier by the addition of scroll indicator bars to the Netgem Emulator.  For those who are unfamilier with the Negtem Emulator, this is the emulator that is launched when you press the "Preview" button to preview one of your created screens within the Starter Kit CMS.

This means you no longer need to launch another application (the Sky or Liberate emulator), or go through the long painstaking process of counting your characters to ensure that they comply with the limitations of the screen template being used.

As it is important to check every screen before publishing, this new addition will make it a quick and simple process.  You can launch straight into the screen you have just created (no need to type long URLs) and if the scroll bars appear and allows you to scroll up and down the page, you will know straight away that you have exceeded the character limitation for the screen template you are using.  In this instance you have a number of options,

    1.  You can re-edit the content to enable it to fit on one page
    2.  You can spread the content over a number of pages in order to avoid a re-edit

The Netgem Emulator is very user friendly allowing you to move the mouse cursor over the link you want and select it by clicking (not like other emulator where you have to use a virtual remote control or the keyboard)

QA is an important process that must be completed prior to any screen or menu being published.

The importance of linking to 'national plugins'

National plugins are an important feature to have on your microsite.  They a good resource for the end user that will keep them returning to your site and drive your usage up.  We know from experience that the user will also take a look at other information and services that you have available even though they primarily came to your site to search for a job or get advice.

The latest and most popular addition to the ever growing National Plugin list is the Jobcentre Plus plugin.  This allows the end user to filter by job type, post code etc. and search for a job in the Jobcentre Plus database from the comfort of their living room.

We highly recommend that everyone takes advantage of as many national plugins as possible and you can see just how easy it is to link to all of our national plugins here. Or contact us if you have any further questions.

Using Common Content

What is Common Content I hear you ask...?

Common Content is a folder within the Starter Kit CMS that stores generic templates, such as interactive questionnaires, forms and content screens. These are pre-built templates, this means that you can pick and choose what you would like to use on the microsite and implement it quickly and easily.

For a full list of interactive forms, click here

Click here to find out how to connect to items within the Common Content folder, or you can contact us

Tip of the Month

This feature of the newsletter is designed to give you tips on all aspects of using the Starter Kit CMS, some you may know, some you may not know.

Each issue will have a different top tip and will hopefully make your life easier whilst using the CMS.

Tip 1:

When you upload an image to the CMS, you can create an "Image" folder to sit at each level where an image is going to be attached, for example:

If you wanted to add an image of a recycling box image to your Rubbish & Recycling content screen (under "Services"), navigate into the Rubbish & Recycling folder, create a New folder called "Rubbish & Recycling Images" and save you related images into this folder. Once you start to get a large library of images uploaded onto the CMS, this method would allow you to keep an eye on, and easily navigate through, your images.

In the next Newsletter......

  • All you need to know about plugins
  • Sending e-mails from the Starter Kit
  • Tip of the Month
  • and more...

What else would you like to see?  Let us know...
