DIGITIV WINS EC FUNDING TO BRING REMOTE HEALTHCARE TO TV SCREENS

DIGITV TO PARTICIPATE IN PROGRAMME TO IMPROVE & EXPAND TELECARE & TELEHEALTH ACROSS EUROPE

DigiTV has won EC funding to develop remote health and social care capability within its interactive digital TV technology, as part of a European consortium tasked with growing and enhancing Telecare and Telehealth provision across Europe. The funding, announced at a consortium project kick off meeting in Valencia earlier this month, is aimed at finding solutions to help the increasing population of chronically ill and elderly people remain independent and living at home as long as possible. The Europe-wide, "T-Seniority Project" is part of the European Commission's "ICT for Ageing Project" and is financed through the Commission's ICT Policy Support Programme.

This win comes on top of further funding announced last month from the Government's Technology Strategy Board (TSB) for DigiTV to develop digital TV solutions for telecare and telehealth services in the UK.

Telehealth and telecare use technology within the home environment to monitor the activity and safety of elderly or chronically ill people; activate their reminder systems and help them access health information easily. It also provides a virtual community of connected carers and cared-for, preventing those living alone feeling isolated and vulnerable.
Steve Langrick, senior responsible officer for DigiTV at Kirklees Council commented: "We are delighted to be part of this project, bringing the convenience and comfort of television as a tool to help those people who have long-term health conditions to remain more independent within their own homes".
